The Most Effective Ways of Preventing Gum Disease

by | Feb 5, 2021 | Resources

According to the Department of Health, moderate to severe gum disease affects  22.9% of Australians. At Beaches Dental Mona Vale, we have a lot of experience in preventing, diagnosing and treating gum disease. We believe that prevention is always better than cure. So, in this article, we share with you the most effective ways of preventing gum disease.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can occur as a result of a build-up of plaque between your teeth and gums. When the bacteria begin to multiply, you can experience inflammation in your gums. Left untreated, this can lead to the deterioration of your gums as well as the surrounding bone. In severe cases, your gums may begin to recede, some of your teeth may become loose and there is also a risk of tooth loss.

Many studies have shown an association between gum disease and other diseases like heart disease and diabetes too. It’s no secret that poor oral health may affect your overall well-being. It’s important to note that gum disease doesn’t always end in your mouth.

Preventing Gum Disease

Whilst this condition is common, it is preventable and manageable. Here are our dentists’ top tips for maintaining a healthy mouth and keeping gum disease away:

Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day

Good oral hygiene is essential in preventing gum disease. Brushing your teeth twice daily plays a big role in your overall oral hygiene regime. It’s best to brush your teeth  in the morning after breakfast and last thing before you go to bed. Our dentists recommend you use a fluoride-based toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush in small circular motions. Don’t forget your gum line!

Floss Daily

Daily flossing is another essential part of a good oral hygiene regime and a major factor when preventing gum disease. Flossing helps reach all the hard-to-get-to places that your toothbrush can’t reach, like between your teeth and gum line.

Use a Mouth Rinse

Using a mouthwash is no substitution for brushing or flossing. Rather, it can be a   good addition to your oral health regime and gum disease prevention. Using a suitable mouthwash can help you reduce the amount of plaque in your mouth. Your dentist can recommend a good one for you to use. Remember to ask them at your next check-up!

Consume a Healthy Diet

Sugary and starchy foods can increase plaque build-up in your mouth. It’s important to consume a balanced diet. One that offers you the nutrients you need to maintain good oral health. Foods that provide vitamin A and C are particularly useful when it comes to preventing gum disease.

Avoid Smoking and Other Tobacco Products

Smoking and using other tobacco products can increase your risk of developing periodontal disease. For those who are already suffering from periodontal disease, using tobacco products can aggravate it further. It’s a good idea to avoid smoking and using other tobacco products for preventing gum disease and a wide range of other negative impacts associated with these substances.

Maintain Regular Dental Check-Ups

Gum disease can be slow to progress and sometimes not cause much discomfort. So, it can be hard to diagnose yourself until it becomes severe. Maintaining regular dental check-ups allows your dentist to monitor the health of your teeth and gums. This means they can detect any potential issues, like gum disease, whilst they’re still easily treatable. Regular dental visits also provide the opportunity for you to receive in-clinic dental care to help keep your mouth healthy, such as:
