How to Keep Your Gums Healthy

Healthy gums are important as they are what hold your teeth in place.  Bleeding gums is usually a sign of gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums.  This bleeding is caused by the build-up of food and bacteria on your teeth. When this build-up sits on the teeth for a while, it can cause your gums to become irritated, inflamed and bleed.

Three ways to avoid bleeding gums and achieve optimal gum health is:

  1. Twice daily tooth brushing with a soft toothbrush and gentle pressure on your gums
  2. Regular flossing to clean and remove food from areas where your toothbrush cannot reach
  3. Cleans with your dentist, who can remove any areas where the build-up has become hard and developed into tartar or calculus that can’t be removed with a toothbrush

Untreated bleeding gums can lead to gum disease where the tissues that hold your teeth in place become infected. This is called periodontal disease. If you’re worried about your gums, the team at Beaches Dental Mona Vale is here to help!
