Gum Health & Periodontal Disease

Healthy gums are an integral part of keeping your teeth happy too. Inflamed gums can bleed on brushing and flossing (its their warning sign to you there is a problem going on) and this inflammation is called gingivitis. If more food and bacteria build up around the teeth due to not brushing this inflammation can turn into infection (periodontitis) of the gums.

The bone supporting your teeth does not want to get infected so it drops down away from the gum but unfortunately the gum cannot support itself and drops down as well following the bone. This then causes a dropping down of both the bone and gums around the teeth – the lack of bone support can lead to the teeth become loose or infection due to bacteria entering the tooth root.

Periodontal disease is treated by regular dental cleans but a large component of treatment is good oral hygiene at home with regular brushing and flossing.
